Sunlight in the forest

A morning break, walking through the local forest
The old trees, many over 100 years in age,
Looking strong on the steep hillside,
noticing areas of erosion and places where the tree roots seek
far from the trunk and across the trail to bear their weight.
Much of the old growth trees have heavy moss covered trunks and underlayers,
of scraggly moss covered bare branches.
All the new growth that fills the understory
happens in the spots where the sunlight filters through.
The tree seedlings, wild fragrant rose, Ferns and Giant Horsetail
fill and hold the ground in fresh greens.
Sometimes it only takes one warm humid breeze
To snap an old tree, exposing the shallow roots and rot inside.

Today, a new Pope was announced
From first impressions on social media,
he has much of the humble compassion of the last Pope
This fills me with hope
Some of the old trees in the forest are rotting
There will be more light in the forest soon for new growth
